Macrocognitive Modeling

Macro-cognition denotes an approach to cognitive modelling and cognitive research that emphasizes on cognitive processes of experts in realistic tasks. In contrast to many approaches in “traditional” psychology, macro-cognitive research investigates cognitive phenomena and functions under conditions that are as realistic as possible. With that said the focus of macro-cognitive models is more on applied problems and on investigating the impact of cognitive processes and limitations on the joint cognitive system as a whole. Therefore not only cognitive processes of the human operator are modelled but also the system the human controls and interacts with. One first approach into that direction was taken with the development of a model of airport traffic control system (MATriCS). The model consist of three parts, describing the whole air traffic control system at airports: The airport model (Manske, Smiesek, Hasselberg & Möhlenbrink, 2013), which accounts for all processes on the airport surface, the controller model, accounting for cognitive processes of the controller (Smieszek, Manske, Hasselberg, Rußwinkel & Möhlenbrink, 2013; Smieszek & Karl, 2012) and an interaction model, which allows for exchanging information between airport and controller. As a suitable modelling tool coloured petri nets (Jensen & Kristensen, 2009) was used. The model allows for replication and prediction of distribution of workload over time of air traffic controllers within different traffic scenarios and at different airports.
